Otto Homburger

Otto Siegmund Homburger (born October 11, 1885 in Karlsruhe ; † May 19, 1964 in Bern ) was a German- Swiss art historian specializing in medieval illumination .

Life

Homburger, a doctor's son, studied after attending the grammar school in Karlsruhe art history and was 1912 in Halle at Adolph Goldschmidt with a thesis on medieval illumination doctorate . From 1919 to 1929 he worked as a curator at the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe. In 1930 he became an honorary professor at the University of Marburg , where he taught medieval art history . In 1935 he was dismissed due to the National Socialist race laws because of his Jewish descent . In 1936 he emigrated to Switzerland

From 1939, Homburger cataloged the “ Bongarsiana ” at the Bern City and University Library (from 1951 at the Bern Burger Library ) according to art historical criteria. From 1951 he was also an honorary professor for medieval art at the University of Bern . In 1953 he acquired Swiss citizenship. In 1962 he published the illustrated manuscripts of the Burgerbibliothek Bern .

His estate is in the Bern Burger Library.

Honors

In 1960 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
