Otto Moll (philologist)

Otto Ernst Eugen Guido Moll (born January 31, 1882 in Culm , West Prussia , † September 7, 1968 in Berlin ) was a German philologist.

Life

Otto Moll, son of the officer Paul Moll, first attended high school in Magdeburg and then entered the Prussian main cadet institute in Groß-Lichterfelde, where he received his school-leaving certificate in 1901. After completing his military service, he first worked in shipbuilding in 1902/03 and then studied New Languages ​​and Philosophy in Berlin, Leipzig, Edinburgh and Kiel . In February and July 1909 he passed the examen pro facultate docendi in Kiel and received his doctorate on December 11, 1909 under Ferdinand Holthausen . Since 1909 he was active at several grammar schools in Berlin, from 1914 to 1928 he was a teacher at the municipal lyceum in Spandau . During the First World War, Moll was deployed to Turkey and Russia, where he was able to further improve his language skills. He devoted himself to language research and worked as a translator. He wrote lexicons in foreign languages ​​or translated Scandinavian sagas and Turkish texts. In particular, he was engaged in proverb research. Living in Spandau, he was considered a "strange original" there.
