Otto Nüssler

Otto Nüssler (born November 28, 1927 in Wiesbaden ; † May 5, 1999 in Wiesbaden) was a German linguist and linguist . He became known for his scientific achievements in the field of the German language.

Life

family

Otto Nüssler grew up as the youngest of three sons of Gottlieb Nüssler and Blandina Nüssler, nee. Linz, in Wiesbaden.

On December 22, 1948 he married Hella Geuder (born April 27, 1926 , born in Waldershof ), with her he was married until his death. The marriage resulted in 2 sons and 4 daughters, the eldest daughter Maria died on the day of her birth on February 3, 1950 .

Professional activity

After graduating from the Gutenberg School in Wiesbaden, Nüssler worked as a proofreader . From 1957 to 1965 he was in charge of the Duden work for German proofreaders. While working as a proofreader, Nüssler was editor of the publication "Sprachwart", the monthly pages of proofreaders in the IG Druck und Papier, in the German printing industry . The editorial staff of the "Sprachwart" magazine included a telephone and letter language advice service, which Nüssler did alone until 1969.

In 1965 he took over the management of the Society for German Language . From 1965 to 1985 Nüssler was editor of the magazines “ Mutterssprache ” and “ Der Sprachdienst ” (published by the GfdS). During these years he worked in numerous bodies and committees, such as B. in the standards committee of the German Institute for Standardization , in the AsKI and in the German-Swiss language association.

He has also represented the GfdS in questions of spelling at several congresses and in the responsible commission of the Institute for German Language .

Honors

The Marburg University awarded him on 21 April 1982 in recognition of his long-standing efforts to language usage and his contributions to modern German the honorary doctorate in the Department "General and Germanic Linguistics and Philology".

In 1978 he was honored by Cardinal Joseph Höffner with the Bonifatius Medal of the German Bishops' Conference for his language advisory work on the standard translation of the Bible .
