Otto Opitz

Otto Opitz (born June 8, 1939 in Deggendorf , Lower Bavaria ) is a German business mathematician and university professor . He dealt with questions of mathematical economic theory, mathematical methods of market research and problems of numerical data analysis.

Life

Opitz studied mathematics , economics and physics at the University of Munich and the University of Saarbrücken . Since 1958 he has been a member of the Corps Hubertia Munich . After graduating in mathematics , in 1966 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Mathematical Statistics and the Institute for Business Research at the University of Karlsruhe . 1969 doctorate he attended the University of Saarbrücken to Dr. rer. nat. Just one year later , he completed his habilitation at the Karlsruhe Faculty of Economics. In 1970/71 he was in the chair for economic theory and econometrics .

In 1971 he was appointed full professor for economic theory and operations research at the University of Innsbruck . The reputation of the University of Bern , he declined the following year. In contrast, he followed the call from Karlsruhe to the chair of the Institute for Decision Theory and Business Research. In Karlsruhe Opitz was dean of the Faculty of Economics from 1975 to 1977 . The German Research Foundation commissioned him with the project taxonomic models and their application in market research .

In 1978 he followed the call of the University of Augsburg to the chair of mathematical methods in economics. In the early 1980s he was visiting professor at the University of Lisbon , the University of Ilmenau and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver . In 1987 he turned down an offer from the Hamburg University of the Federal Armed Forces . In 1984/85 he was dean and in 2001 prorector of the University of Augsburg. For his 60th birthday, colleagues honored him with a commemorative publication . In 2006 he retired at the age of 67.

From 1998 to 2004 he was chairman of the Society for Classification (GfKl) Data Science Society. In March 2007 he was made an honorary member at the GfKl general meeting.
