Otto Paul Wenger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Paul Wenger (* 1919 ; † September 25, 1981 ) was a Swiss coin dealer and numismatist. He was one of the most famous coin dealers in Switzerland , who anchored coin collecting to the public through his many popular scientific articles in the early 1970s.

Otto Paul Wenger initially continued his father's bonnet shop in Bern. He also collected coins. His interest was triggered by the purchase of a Roman ace in 1949 from the Münzen und Medaille AG in Basel. In 1968 the silver boom in Germany and especially in Switzerland sparked widespread interest in coin collecting. Otto Paul Wenger used this favorable climate to turn his hobby into a profession. In 1970 he gave up his father's business and took over the numismatic department at the Schweizerische Kreditanstalt . In this function he looked after countless collectors at the bank counter. His knowledge of the beginner's questions enabled him to publish countless popular science articles in various, mainly non-numismatic, media. Best known was his Kleine Münzkunde published by Hallwag-Verlag .
