Otto Riemer

Otto Moritz Martin Riemer (born September 2, 1902 in Badeleben ; † June 26, 1977 in Waibstadt ) was a German music historian , writer and critic .

Life

Riemer was born in Badeleben ( Neuhaldensleben district , Province of Saxony ) near Magdeburg as the son of a pastor . After attending the Magdeburg High School (1913–1921), he studied musicology, education and philosophy at the Universities of Marburg, Leipzig and Halle. He heard u. a. with Hermann Stephani , Nicolai Hartmann , Heinz Heimsoeth , Hermann Abert , Friedrich Blume , Felix Krueger , Hans Joachim Moser , Paul Menzer , Theodor Draw and Ottomar Wichmann . From 1924 to 1926 he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory , where Carl Adolf Martienssen (piano) and Fritz Reuter (theory) were among his teachers. In Halle he took singing lessons from Hans Klemann . In 1927 he was at Arnold Schering at the University of Halle-Wittenberg with the dissertation Erhard Bodenschatz and his Florilegium Portense to Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1929 to 1933 he worked as a music critic in Görlitz. Then he became a teacher of music history at the Magdeburg Music Teachers' Seminar. He also continued to work as a music critic. Riemer soon worked as a music advisor for the administrative district of Magdeburg and as municipal music representative. From 1937 to 1943 he was head of the cultural department in the public education office of the city of Magdeburg. He was also chairman of the state examination board for private music teachers. In 1943 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht .

From 1949 he worked as a music critic in Heidelberg. In 1954 he became a lecturer in music history at the music college. In 1962 he received a teaching position at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He was also a member of the Society for Music Research .

Riemer was married and had one son.
