Otto Schmid (architect)
Otto Schmid (born June 27, 1857 in Maria-Lanzendorf ; † 1921 ) was an Austrian architect. He designed several important large hotels in Tyrol .
Life
Schmid was born in Maria-Lanzendorf near Vienna in 1857. After studying architecture, his teacher Friedrich von Schmidt sent him to the restoration of Runkelstein Castle in Bolzano.
Through his acquaintance with the pioneer of Tyrolean tourism Theodor Christomannos , he planned and built the Suldenhotel in Sulden from 1891–92 (opening: July 1, 1893), which remained in the family's possession until 1973. On July 1, 1896, the Hôtel Trafoi , built according to his plans, was opened, financed by the Association for Alpine Hotels (I. Ranges) in Tyrol, founded in Merano in mid-1895 . This was followed (with the opening on July 1) in 1899 by the Grandhotel Pragser Wildsee , which Schmid planned for Eduard Hellensteiner, who came from Niederdorf , and his (nationally known) mother Emma Hellensteiner († 1904; age: 86). In 1903 the Grand Hotel Kitzbühel was opened according to Otto Schmid's plans . In 1904 the evangelical chapel was built in Sulden according to plans by Otto Schmid. The chapel on Lake Braies followed in the same year. He was also heavily involved as an architect in the Grandhotel Karersee on the Karer Pass , which opened on the same day as the Hôtel Trafoi .
The Grand Hotel Pragser Wildsee (hotel) and the Grand Hotel Kitzbühel ( McKinsey Alpine University) still give an impression of the architecture of the time . The two chapels are unchanged. The Trafoi Hotel burned down to the ground in 1917. The Suldenhotel was completely rebuilt in 1975.
