Otto Schröder (church musician)

Karl Otto Schröder (born March 19, 1860 in Halle (Saale) ; † January 24, 1946 there ) was a German musician , cantor and composer .

Life

Otto Schröder, born in Halle in 1860, completed his studies in classical philology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg after graduating from high school . After Schröder was employed as a singing teacher for a short time , he received his musical training at the Leipzig Conservatory . In 1893 he took over the post of cantor at the Marktkirche Our Dear Women in Halle and that of the choir director of the city singing choir there , and he also appeared as a concert singer .

In 1900 Otto Schröder followed a call to Torgau as a grammar school cantor , where he founded the “Gesangsverein” , which dedicated itself in particular to maintaining the works of Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach . In 1910 he was appointed royal music director, in 1911 professor , and in 1925 he retired. He then returned to Halle, where he occupied himself almost exclusively with Johann Walter until his death , transferred his work into a modern score and was finally encouraged by Max Schneider to prepare and publish a complete edition.

Otto Schröder's compositional work includes choral songs and motets .
