Otto Semmelroth

Otto Semmelroth SJ (born December 1, 1912 in Bitburg , † September 24, 1979 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German theologian.

Life

He entered the Low German Jesuit Province in 's-Heerenberg in 1932 . After being ordained a priest in Valkenburg aan de Geul in 1939 , he took his last religious vows in Büren in 1949 . He studied philosophy and theology in Valkenburg and Bonn , where he in 1947 with a thesis on the theology of Pseudo-Dionysius doctorate was. He then taught in Valkenburg, before moving to the PTH Sankt Georgen as professor of dogmatic theology in 1950 ( rector 1972–1978).

Since 1962 present in Rome as a private advisor to Hermann Volks , he became the official peritus from the second period of the Second Vatican Council in 1963 . In 1953 he coined the term “Church as the Primordial Sacrament”, which not only “distributes” sacraments but is “itself a sacrament, an effective sign of God's grace”. The idea and the terminology flowed into the church constitution Lumen Gentium of the council, which was passed on November 21, 1964 .

Otto Semmelroth is buried in the Südfriedhof (Frankfurt am Main) .
