Otto Strasser (musician)

Otto Strasser (born August 13, 1901 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary; † May 27, 1996 in Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge , Austria) was an Austrian violinist with the Vienna Philharmonic and its honorary director.

Life

Otto Strasser attended the Academy for Music in Vienna and passed his musical school leaving examination in 1923. In addition to his work as a musician, he studied electroacoustics at the Technical University in Vienna and graduated in 1937 with a degree in engineering. From December 1922 he was a member of the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera . From October 1, 1923 he became a member of the Vienna Philharmonic , from 1934 section leader of the 2nd violinist. From 1938 to 1940 he was managing director of the Vienna Philharmonic, from 1940 to 1941 deputy board member and from 1958 to 1966 board member. He was a member of various quartets (Weißgärber, Schneiderhan , Barylli and Philharmonic Quartet). He played a total of 435 quartet evenings at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, plus another 1,500 quartet concerts at home and abroad. From 1952 onwards, a large part of the repertoire with the Barylli Quartet was recorded on record in Europe and Japan.

He was married and had three daughters. On January 1, 1967, he retired with the Vienna Philharmonic, but continued to play as a substitute at the Vienna State Opera. His grave is located at the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 34 A, Row 2, Number 5).
