Otto Tachenius (* 1610 in Herford as Otto Tacke ; † 1680 in Venice ) was a German pharmacist , pharmacist, doctor, iatrochemist and alchemist , who was well known in the 17th century, but was later almost forgotten.

Life

The son of the Westphalian mill leaseholder Heinrich Tacke began training in pharmacies in Herford, Detmold and Lemgo , where he worked with his employer Dr. Timpler fell out and left the area. A twelve-year wandering took "Tachenius", as he now called himself, via Königsberg , Warsaw and Vienna to the university city of Padua , where he received his doctorate. He then lived mainly in Venice , but often accompanied aristocrats as a personal physician on trips and became wealthy. He discovered silicic acid , the acid content in oils and fats, and explained the cleaning effect of soaps. In 1666 he published his best known book Hippocrates Chimicus . He went beyond his teacher Franciscus Sylvius and was certain that acids and bases are the basis of all chemical processes. With very self-confident polemics against the establishment and the screeching propaganda of miracle cures made from snake poisons, he also made many enemies.
