Otto Wolfgang Bechtle

Otto Wolfgang Bechtle (born March 10, 1918 in Stuttgart ; † July 25, 2012 ) was a German entrepreneur as well as a publisher and editor.

Life

The son of the newspaper publisher and book printer owner Richard Bechtle (1882–1944), completed an apprenticeship as a publisher and bookseller and in 1947 joined the management of the " Esslinger Zeitung ", of which he was the publisher and editor-in-chief. In 1949 he founded the Bechtle publishing house, which discovered and promoted the authors Heinz Piontek and Peter Härtling . In 1960 he took over the " Cannstatter Zeitung " and the " Untertürkheimer Zeitung ". He built up the Bechtle Verlag & Druck in Baden-Württemberg.

From 1953 he was involved as a co-founder of the Association of Southwest German Newspaper Publishers , of which he was honorary chairman until his death. From 1970 to 1987 he was its president, from 1963 to 1970 vice-president of the Federal Association of German Newspaper Publishers (VSZV) . 1958 Bechtle became a member of the supervisory board of the news agency dpa ; from 1974 to 1991 he was its chairman and its honorary chairman until his death. From 1973 to 1980 he was a member of the German Press Council , from 1978 to 1980 he was its spokesman. Bechtle was less popular with APO because BILD was printed in his house : "Bechtle, Bechtle, Springers Knechtle".

He received the Federal Cross of Merit with a star and the appointment as a Knight of the French Legion of Honor .
