Karl Kasimir Otto Ritter von Thoren (born July 21, 1828 in Vienna , † July 15, 1889 in Paris ) was an Austrian officer and painter .

Life

Thoren was the son of Colonel Franz Kasimir Ritter von Thoren and his wife Konstanze Maria (née Lachmann). He became an officer in 1846 and took part in the Hungarian campaign in 1848 . He then stayed for a long time in Venice , where he was employed as an adjutant to the military and civil governor Ludwig Gorzkowski . After turning to painting in 1857, he studied for several years in Brussels and Paris.

In the mid-1860s he was commissioned to paint an equestrian portrait of Emperor Franz Josef in Vienna. After he had painted the death of Gustav Adolf , a popular motif for history painters, he turned to animal painting , especially the depiction of grazing cattle. The paintings he created can be found in the Army History Museum in Vienna. He died in Paris and was buried in the Montmartre cemetery.
