Ottokar Alfred von Tilly (born March 7, 1823 in Berlin ; † November 6, 1881 there ) was royal Prussian lieutenant general and most recently director of the department for the disabled in the war ministry.

His parents were Johann Friedrich von Tilly (* June 7, 1781; † November 2, 1830) and his wife Auguste Friederike Ulrich (* 1792; † November 9, 1825). His father was a lieutenant colonel and commander of the 37th Infantry Regiment , as well as a knight of the Iron Cross 1st class.

Life

He became a cadet in Potsdam on September 6, 1834 and a cadet in Berlin on August 11, 1837 . On August 9, 1840, he joined the 24th Infantry Regiment as a second lieutenant. During the March Revolution on May 17, 1849, he took part in the fight against the unrest in Iserlohn ; he defended the Zeughaus in Berlin on June 14, 1849 . During the Baden Revolution he fought in the battles near Homburg, Runnthal, Cronau, Malsch, Muggensturm, Kuppenheim and Iffezheim.

On June 20, 1852 he was then appointed regimental adjutant and on January 11, 1853 promoted to Premier-Lieutenant. On April 1, 1853, he joined the 6th Division as an adjutant and was promoted to captain on April 13, 1858. On April 22, 1858 he was released from his command and on October 20, 1858 as an adjutant to the General Command in the III. Army corps transferred. On February 18, 1863, he came to the 50th Infantry Regiment on March 10, 1855, leaving his position with a patent. On March 17, 1863 he was promoted to major and on December 15, 1863 appointed as an adjutant to the general command of the 1st Combined Army Corps.

During the German-Danish War of 1864 he fought near Eckernförde, Missunde , Büffelkoppel and Rackbüll. He took part in the assault on the Düppeler Schanzen as well as in the transition to Alsen . On March 10, 1864, he was commended for his brave behavior and on April 22, 1864 he was awarded the Order of the Crown, 3rd Class with Swords .

On August 13, 1864 he became battalion commander of the 58th Infantry Regiment and on August 14, 1864 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class with swords . On April 1, 1865, he was assigned to serve in the military cabinet. During the German War of 1866 he fought in the Battle of Königgrätz , for which he received the Knight's Cross of the House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords on September 20, 1866 . He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on October 29, 1866 and came to the War Ministry on January 29, 1867 with the rank of department chief, where he was appointed department chief on April 30, 1867. On March 22, 1868 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd Class with Swords, and on July 3, 1868, he was promoted to colonel.

During the Franco-Prussian War he fought at Gravelotte and Sedan and the siege of Paris . For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on September 9, 1870 and the Iron Cross 1st Class on June 15, 1871 .

On November 29, 1871, he was appointed chief of the disability department in the War Ministry with the rank of brigade commander. There he was promoted to major general on March 22, 1873. On July 10, 1873, he was appointed director of the Department of Disability and was confirmed as director on January 2, 1875. In addition, on January 18, 1875, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on the ring . On June 11, 1879, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and on January 18, 1880, he was also awarded the star of the Order of the Red Eagle.

He died on November 6, 1881 in Berlin and was buried on November 10, 1881 in the Invalidenfriedhof .

Tilly married on June 18, 1857 in Berlin Anna Cäcilie von Erhardt (* August 15, 1836 - March 26, 1919), a daughter of General Johann Christoph Ludwig von Erhardt . The marriage remained childless.
