Ottokar Freiherr von Feilitzsch (born July 15, 1817 in Langensalza , † June 11, 1885 in Bayreuth ) was a German physicist.

Life

Ottokar von Feilitzsch came from the old noble family Feilitzsch , who were resident in Vogtland and Upper Franconia . He studied at the University of Leipzig and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität . In 1841 he became a member of the Corps Palatia Bonn . In the same year he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . In 1844 he completed his habilitation. After four years as a lecturer in Bonn he went in 1848 as associate professor at the Royal University of Greifswald . In 1854 he came to the chair of physics. In 1857 he was the founder and first director of the Physics Institute in Greifswald. He built up a physical collection. In 1859 he was rector of the university. Feilitzsch worked on magnetism and electricity . With his assistant Wilhelm Holtz , he built a large magnet with a field strength of 1 Tesla . In 1845 he became a foreign member of the Physical Society in Berlin .
