Residents 13,076 15,433 18,616

The majority of the inhabitants are of Berber descent and immigrated from the surrounding mountain regions after the independence of Morocco. Most of the time, however, Moroccan Arabic is spoken .

economy

The place used to be characterized by fishing, oyster farming and agriculture, cattle breeding also plays a certain role. In the place itself there were craftsmen, small traders and other service professions. Since the end of the 20th century, tourism (holiday apartments, hotels, etc.) has played an increasingly important role in economic life.

history

As in all Berber-inhabited areas of the Maghreb, there is little information about the history of the place before the beginning of the Protectorate period . In the 17th century, the Saadian Sultan Al-Walid (ruled 1631–1636), after whom the place is named, built a fortress ( kasbah ), but only remains of it have survived. For centuries Oualidia was probably just a fishing village with about 1,000 inhabitants; Only after the independence of Morocco (1956) did the immigration-related population growth of the place begin.

Attractions

The lagoon and beaches are the main attractions of the place.
