Mediterranean coast near Oued Laou

Oued Laou ( Arabic واد لاو, Central Atlas Tamazight ⴰⵙⵉⴼ ⵏ ⵍⴰⵡ Asif n Law ) is a small coastal town and seaside resort with around 10,000 inhabitants in the province of Tétouan in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region in northern Morocco .

Location and climate

Oued Laou is located on the steeply sloping Mediterranean coast of the Rif Mountains about 46 km (driving distance) southeast of Tétouan and about 52 km northeast of Chefchaouen ; the mouth of the coastal river of the same name is about 2 km south of the small town. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 530 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter months.

The majority of the population is of Berber descent; Dialects of Tarifit as well as Moroccan Arabic are spoken .

economy

The former population of only about 1,000 people lived until well into the 20th century mainly from fishing and the low yields of agriculture, which also included the keeping of goats and chickens. Only since the 1970s and 1980s has beach tourism gradually been added as a source of income, which now plays a not unimportant role in economic life.
