Life

Argyros was born in Kavala, his parents came from the place Nigrita near Serres . He studied painting at the Athens School of Art . There he was a student of Nikiforos Lytras and Georgios Roilos . He graduated in 1904 with the highest grade. This was followed by a scholarship from the Georg Averoff Foundation from 1906 to 1911 at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Otto Seitz , Ludwig von Löfftz and Carl von Marr . He stayed in Munich until 1929, but during this time he also undertook major educational trips to European countries, to Jerusalem and Egypt.

In 1929 he became a full professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts . He was also once vice director and three times director of the art college. Some of the later great Greek artists, such as the painters Fotis Zachariou , Georgios Manousakis , Yannis Moralis , Giannis Spyropoulos , the graphic artist Telemachos Kanthos , the sculptor Christos Kapralos and others learned in his studio

Argyros took part in exhibitions all over the world with his pictures. His works can now be found in many public exhibition facilities, including the art collection of the Greek Parliament, the National Gallery in Athens , Serres and the Municipal Gallery in Rhodes. Argyros also stayed in Heidelberg for some time. During his stay in Heidelberg he created the impressionistic picture View of Heidelberg .

During the Second World War he was commissioned by the then Greek government of Metaxas to go to the Greek-Italian front as an official war painter , together with the sculptor Fokion Rok . 32 paintings were created from his impressions at the front. These can be seen today in the Military Museum of Athens.

In 1952 he was awarded the National Art Medal. In 1959 he was appointed a permanent member of the Academy of Athens . He died four years later in Athens in 1963.

As a pupil of Nikiforos Lytras, Argyros was initially a painter of the so-called Munich School , but later he painted harmoniously in the style of Impressionism.
