Out of the Cellar is the debut album by the American glam metal band Ratt , released in 1984 .

background

After the band was founded in 1979 under the name Mickey Ratt , they renamed themselves after a few in 1982 in Ratt . Local radio stations played some songs from their compact cassette , creating a growing demand for a record . Therefore an EP called Ratt was produced in-house. The label Time Coast Records, that alone for the publications of the punk arose band The Alleycats, she took in 1983 in their program and they promptly sold 50,000 times. These sales, increased radio use (the so-called airplay ) and the success of their concerts brought the group the attention of Atlantic Records , where the band received a recording contract . Together with music producer Beau Hill, who completed his first production work for a major label with the band's debut album, the group went to the recording studio The Village Recorder .

The newcomer put his immediate goal in the title of the record: "For us that means: Out of LA and into the big wide world."

reception

In 1984 the Musikexpress described the album as follows: "Straight forward riffs and a number of strokes for the faint-hearted are the elements from which the Californian band [...] knows how to create a whole." It was rated 4 out of 7 points.

The album was mentioned in two places in Metal Hammer . In the band introduction at the front of the booklet it says: “This is not just about 'chopping away', Ratt tries to go beyond the usual ideas of heavy metal. Polyphonic singing and relatively complicated arrangements are the order of the day, a project that does not always succeed optimally. ”The record review in the back part of the magazine repeats this with a different formulation and notes that half-baked and toothless would have prevented the“ big hit ”.

In 1984 Rock Power said: "This album may not have the harshness of their debut album, but they have presented a good piece of American rock music."

Eduardo Rivadavia, reviewer at allmusic.com , wrote about Out of the Cellar that after signing their record deal , the band had turned their “high-energy hard rock”, which was influenced by the usual suspects (Van Halen and Aerosmith)” , into a “multi-platinum-oriented one Moloch transformed ” . The album is "entertaining from beginning to end" , which is " thanks in particular to the titles Wanted Man, Back for More and the frenetic I'm Insane" .

Out of the Cellar immediately reached number 7 on the Billboard 200 and has been awarded three platinum ratings. A total of four singles were released in the USA in 1984 : Round and Round , Black for More , Wanted Man and Lack of Communication . In Germany, Round and Round was released with Ratt's very first single You Think You're Tough on the B-side on February 22, 1985.
