Outgert Cluyt
Outgert Cluyt latinized Augerius Clutius (* 1578 in Delft ; † October 6, 1636 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch doctor , botanist and entomologist .
Live and act
Outgert Cluyt is the eldest son of the pharmacist Dirck Outgaerstz Cluyt (1546–1598), who was the first overseer of the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden. In 1594 he began to study philosophy and medicine at the University of Leiden . After completing his studies, he went to Montpellier , where he helped design the university's botanical garden . He traveled to Spain and North Africa and brought plants from there for the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden. After his return he settled as a doctor in Amsterdam. He married Haasje Pieters in 1609 and Susanna Spranger in 1613, a cousin of the artist Bartholomäus Spranger .
His work De nuce medica from 1634 contains 56 pages and 10 woodcuts that deal with the coconut , as well as a treatise on the tulip . In De hemerobio sive Ephemero insecto he described an insect which he assumed to be Aristotle's ephemeron ( mayflies ).
Dedication names
Herman Boerhaave named the genus Clutia of the plant family of the milkweed family (Euphorbiaceae) in his honor . Carl von Linné later took over this name.
Also the plant genera Cluytia Steud. and Cluytiandra Müll.Arg. , also both from the milkweed family, were named after him.
