Overland Monthly

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Overland Monthly was a literary magazine that appeared in California from July 1868 to July 1935 .

The writer Bret Harte founded the magazine Overland Monthly in July 1868 and also ran it as its first editor-in-chief. When choosing the title, Harte took The Atlantic Monthly, published in Boston ( Massachusetts ), as a model .

This magazine appeared monthly between summer 1868 and winter 1875. Then it was discontinued for economic reasons. Five years later the same editorial team reactivated the magazine under the title The Californian, and after two years - October 1882 - the title was changed to The Californian and Overland Monthly .

This second attempt also turned out to be economically more successful, so that with the January issue of 1883 they returned to the "original title" Overland Monthly and began again with the counting of the issues (vol. 1 ff.).

In 1923 Overland Monthly merged with Out West magazine and changed its title to Overland Monthly and the Out West Magazine . Under this title, the publication was discontinued with the July 1935 issue.
