Gabal Uwainat (1934 m; Arabic جبل عوينات Jabal ʿUwaināt , Egyptian-Arabic : Gabal ʿUwaināt ; also Auenat , Ouenat , Ouinat , Owainat , Uwaynat , Uweinat , Uwenat , Uweynat and many more) is a mountain in the Egyptian - Libyan - Sudanese border triangle. The name means "mountain of small springs".

geography

The national borders are drawn with a ruler in this part of the Sahara . The highest point at 1934 meters, Mount Bagnold, and the larger part of the massif are in Libya. Jabal Arkanu lies about 40 km north-northwest on Libyan terrain.

geology

The Gebel Uweinat is a granitic intrusion . Valleys are named here instead of Wadi Karkur .

The Gabal Uwainat can be geologically divided into two areas.

The western part is the eroded part of a granite dome that appears today as a ring complex (25 km in diameter). To the west, the Gabal Uwainat is drained through three large valleys: Karkur Hamid, Karkur Idriss and Karkur Ibrahim. Two springs can be found in the south: Ain Ghazal and Ain Doua. These springs are only fed from rainwater, but they have not dried up in memory.

The eastern area consists of Paleozoic sandstone that rests on the Precambrian basement. The complex valley systems in the east flow into the Karkur Talh. In the Karkur Murr there is a permanent water point (so-called Guelta ) Ain al-Brins (Bir Murr).

history

In prehistoric times this area was still inhabited. Thousands of rock carvings have been discovered in the Uwainat .
