Owl Fisher , also known as Ugla Stefanía Kristjönudóttir Jónsdóttir , is an Icelandic non - binary person best known as a journalist and transgender activist . Fisher was selected for a portrait on the BBC 100 Women series in 2019 .

As chair of the Trans Iceland organization , Fisher played a key role in drafting legislation to extend the rights of transgender and non-binary persons in Iceland . From 2015 to 2019, Fisher worked with Kitty Anderson of Intersex Island and with Icelandic lawmakers to help develop the Icelandic Gender Autonomy Act , which was passed in June 2019. Fisher criticized the final version of the law for removing the provisions against medical interventions for intersexuality , which were originally part of the law.

Fisher works with the British civil rights organization All About Trans , which works to improve the way transgender people are presented in the media. In particular, Fisher works activist against social and legal constraints of the binary gender system and heteronormative sexual performances. Fisher wrote several articles for British newspapers, including the Guardian , the Independent and the lesbian magazine Diva .

Since 2016, Fisher has worked as a co-director and producer with Fox Fisher on the ongoing film project My Genderation , which portrays the lives and experiences of transsexual and transgender people in individual short films .

In 2018, Fisher and Fox Fisher published the Trans Teen Survival Guide to help transgender and non-binary adolescents in their personal development and self-discovery.

Private life

Owl Fisher moved to the UK in 2016 and lives in Brighton with his non-binary partner Fox Fisher . Both names - English Owl , Icelandic Ugla  - mean " owl " (bird). Fisher claims to be designated in a gender-neutral way with the singular pronoun they (untranslatable in German).
