Oxford is a small town in the Waimakariri District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The place was probably named by the immigrants and founders of the place after the British university city of Oxford or in honor of the founding member of the Canterbury Association , Samuel Wilberforce , who was Bishop of Oxford from 1845 to 1869 .

geography

Oxford is located around 35 km northwest of Christchurch , on the northwestern edge of the Canterbury Plains . The Eyre River passes south of the place and the mountain landscape with the 1364  m high Mount Oxford is adjacent to the north.

history

Oxford was founded in the mid-1800s and in January 1861 had around 25 people who were allowed to vote. As agriculture and forestry developed rapidly in the region, the settlement at that time grew in the following 20 years and counted 513 citizens entitled to vote. For the 2013 census, 1905 inhabitants were determined.
