Oxybelus argentatus is a Hymenoptera from the family of Crabronidae . The species also carries the German name Große Fliegenspießwasp .
features
The digger wasp reaches a body length of 5 to 9 millimeters. Your body is mostly black. The back shield and the lateral appendages are yellow. There is a pair of pale yellow or white spots on each of the abdominal segments. The abdomen of the females is covered with silver hairs. The anterior femora are black. The remaining femora are mostly yellow-red in color. The tibia and tarsi have a yellow-reddish pattern.
distribution
The species occurs in large parts of Europe. Their occurrence ranges from Sweden and Finland in the north through Central Europe to Spain and Italy in the south. The species is also represented in the British Isles .
Way of life
The typical habitat of Oxybelus argentatus is formed by open sand biotopes such as coastal dunes or inland dunes . The digger wasps fly from late June to late August. They create their nests on loose sandy surfaces. The nest boxes consist of several chambers. Captured lynx flies (Therevidae) such as Acrosathe annulata and Thereva fulva serve as food for the hatched larvae . These are skewered by the female digger wasps and transported to the nest cavity.
