Oxycarenus pallens is a bug in the family Oxycarenidae .

features

The bugs are 3.2-4.3 mm in size. The head, antennae and legs are colored light brown. The apical ends of the femora are white. The whitish pronotum has a broad brown transverse ligament in the front half. The base of the otherwise whitish scutellum is brown in color. The wings are predominantly whitish.

distribution

Oxycarenus pallens is widespread in the southern Palearctic . Their distribution area extends from the Mediterranean area to northern China. In Europe, the species has spread more and more to the north in recent years. The species was first detected in Germany in 2004. Since then there have been various new finds, for example from Saxony (2005), Rhineland-Palatinate (2007) and Hesse (2017). The bug shown was discovered in July 2018 in Walldorf / Baden as part of a colony on a thistle. The bug species has also been found in Austria and the Czech Republic.

Way of life

Oxycarenus pallens prefers heat-favored areas as habitat. Host and fodder plants include knapweed ( Centaurea ), thistle ( Cirsium ), goose thistle ( Sonchus ) and ring thistle ( Carduus ). The adults hibernate. Eggs are laid on the flower heads of the host plants from the end of May. The adult bugs of the new generation appear from July. There is evidence of a possibly incomplete second generation.
