Paul Lukas

Paul Lukas (born May 26, 1894 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary ; † August 15, 1971 in Tangier , Morocco ; actually Pál Lukács ) was a Hungarian-American actor. For his appearance in the film Watch on the Rhine , he won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1944 .

Career

The Hungarian Lukas, whose real name was Pál Lukács , began his acting career in 1916 in the Austro-Hungarian Kaschau as a theater actor and quickly rose to become a popular actor on various stages. At the height of his European career he was often seen in productions by Max Reinhardt .

In 1927 he went to the USA at the invitation of Adolph Zukor and initially signed a contract with Paramount , where he was placed alongside some of the studio's biggest female stars, such as Pola Negri ( Three Sinners , The Woman from Moscow ), Ruth Chatterton ( The Right to Love , Unfaithful , Anybody's Woman , Tomorrow and Tomorrow ) and Kay Francis ( I Found Stella Parrish ).

He celebrated his greatest success in 1943 as a partner of Bette Davis in Watch on the Rhine , for which he received the Oscar and the New York Film Critics Circle Award for best actor. Lukas had already played the role in the play of the same name by Lillian Hellman on Broadway.

In 1954, when Lukas played the role of Professor Aronnax in Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea , he was already suffering from memory problems. This led to incompatible social behavior, from which his friend Peter Lorre also suffered.

Lukas was a member of the anti-communist Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals in the 1940s . In his first marriage he was married to Gizella Benes from 1927 until her death in 1962. In 1963 he married Annette M. Driesens, this marriage lasted until his death. He died in Tangier and was buried in the Cementerio de Benalmádena cemetery in Málaga.
