The Upper Austria University of Education (PH OÖ) is one of nine public teacher training institutions in Austria . The Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) is the sponsor. The PH OÖ is based in the Upper Austrian capital Linz .

The "National Center of Competence e-Education" and the "National Center of Competence for psychosocial health promotion" are integrated into the PH Upper Austria.

With around 3,000 students and around 60,000 participants annually in further education, training and school development offers, the PH Upper Austria is the largest educational university in western Austria. The PH OÖ cooperates with more than 50 universities inside and outside Europe.

The university has been headed by Rector Walter Vogel since December 2019 . The rector is supported by Katharina Soukup-Altrichter and Josef Oberneder as vice rectors. Vogel's predecessor as rector of the University of Education was Herbert Gimpl.

Teacher training courses

The Upper Austrian University of Education offers courses to train teachers for primary and secondary levels (in cooperation with eight other universities in Upper Austria and Salzburg). As one of four vocational education centers in Austria, the PH OÖ also offers vocational teacher training courses.

As part of the NEW teacher training program, teacher training in Austria was reformed in 2015. The aim of the reform efforts was to better adapt the training to the requirements of the teaching profession and to ensure that teachers have an equivalent training through cooperation between teacher training colleges and universities. From the 2016/17 winter semester, ten colleges and universities in Upper Austria and Salzburg will be offering joint secondary education in the Cluster Mitte cooperation network , which will enable graduates to teach at AHS, NMS, polytechnic schools, special schools and BMHS (general subjects).

In the 2020/21 academic year these are:

• Teaching degree for primary level: duration of the bachelor’s course 8 semesters (240 EC), duration of the subsequent (part-time) master’s course 2 semesters (60 EC); Forms of study: full-time study, study for working people;
• Teaching degree for general secondary education: duration of the bachelor’s degree 8 semesters (240 EC), duration of the subsequent (part-time) master’s course 4 semesters (120 EC); Forms of study: full-time study
• Secondary teacher training in vocational education - Information and communication department: duration of the bachelor’s degree 8 semesters (240 EC), duration of the subsequent (part-time) master’s course 2 semesters (60 EC);
• Secondary teacher training in vocational education - Nutrition department: duration of the bachelor’s course 8 semesters (240 EC), duration of the subsequent (part-time) master’s course 2 semesters (60 EC);
• Secondary education teacher training - dual education and technology and trade: duration of the bachelor’s degree 8 semesters (240 EC), duration of the subsequent (part-time) master’s course 2 semesters (60 EC);

Continuing education and training

In addition to initial training, advanced training events, school development projects as well as courses and master’s studies for directors, teachers, kindergarten teachers and other target groups from educational fields are offered. In addition, conferences and projects with national and international partner organizations for teaching and educational research are carried out.
