In November 2019 he was appointed as successor to Herbert Gimpl as rector of the Upper Austria University of Education from December 1, 2019.

theologian

He first became known as a theologian in 1996. That year he published the first computer lexicon for religion on CD-ROM. This work, which was highly regarded at the time (around 50 authors, some of them well-known, were involved in the work) includes all material for the Abitur (in Austria: Matura ) for the school subject Catholic religion and is still the basis for many teachers and students today for their Abitur preparation.

In 1997 Vogel initiated church services in cyberspace for the first time (later he called them Internet church services ). With great media attention, he used the Internet, which was still relatively new for many at the time, in the proclamation of the faith. The special feature of these internet services was the interactive participation of all participants via chats - this participation was a constitutive part of the service. From December 1997 to January 2004 there was either a weekly internet service or a moderated religious chat. With this project, Vogel was the pioneer of interactive religious celebrations in the German-speaking area. Information about this project can be found in Stefan Böntert's dissertation "Church services on the Internet: Perspectives of a dialogue between the Internet and liturgy" (Stuttgart, Kohlhammer, 2005, 334 pages).

In addition to this liturgical activity, Vogel formulated the “teaching principle of communicative networking” especially for religious education and promoted it with numerous projects. You can read about this project in his publication “Religious Education Communicatively Networked”. Another publication in this context should be mentioned here: “Walter Vogel: Religion digital. Computers in Religious Education ”.

In addition to its pioneering role in the field of “computer and religion (s) teaching”, Vogel has dealt intensively with general school issues. He was the scientific director of two curriculum groups in Austria, the vocational school curriculum for the Catholic religion and the religious curriculum for the vocational middle school in Austria .

author

Walter Vogel is the author (or co-author) of around 20 scientific and popular science books and has published over 50 articles in specialist journals. His book “How to learn as a teacher” was published in autumn 2008 as a licensed edition in Bulgarian and in 2009 in Czech by Fraus Verlag.

Vogel is the initiator and author of anyway! , so far the only textbook in the German-speaking area that was not published as a book, but as a magazine. With this publication he has broken new pedagogical territory.

In addition to this academic activity, he is also the author of plays:

  • Aunt Mitzi must be here (premiere: April 2009)
  • The wine tasting
  • Distressed father
  • The last pilgrimage (premiere: September 2009)
