Catholic branch church St. Pauli Conversion

In Pürgl, in a mountainous forest landscape, stands the small church of St. Pauli Conversion, a branch church of Neukirchen, which was built by the lordship of Haggn. A number on the choir vault indicates 1712 as the year the church was built, a three-icon complex with a turret .

The frescoes , whose creator Joseph Anton Merz is named, glorify the apostle Paul . The altars and pulpit in linden wood were made around 1730. The painting on the high altar shows the conversion of Paul. The three bells come from the years 1719, 1740 and 1796. The church is looked after by the Friends of the Pürgl Church.

The former Pürgl Castle , of which only a castle stable has been preserved, was built in 1331.

The Pürgl Church is supported by the Friends of the Pürgl Church e. V. carefully restored and maintained. The association has set itself the task of obtaining funding for this through contributions, donations and external grants.

The Pürgler Church - a baroque gem

One of the most beautiful and art-historically interesting churches in the Straubing-Bogen district was built in 1712 in Pürgl near Neukirchen. The builder of the church was the lord of the castle von Haggn , Freiherr Leopold von Rehling zum Pürgl and Sparr . The history of the Pürgl Church is closely related to the history of the former Hofmark Pürgl. The small castle, the "Pürglein", had been inhabited since 1331 and the owners at the time, Ursenbeck from Irschenbach , had, as usual, built a small church near their castle to pray and celebrate church services there.

A red marble tombstone from 1548 comes from this previous building and is embedded in the floor under the staircase in today's church. Around 1740, the Freiherr von Asch founded the first pilgrimage to a Mariahilf painting . Many people then expressed their wishes, prayed and later thanked them with donations. The first renovation took place in 1908. On June 8, 1978, the then sole owner left the little church in Pürgl free of charge to the newly founded "Förderverein Kirche Pürgl". In the period from 1978 to 1983, an extensive interior and exterior renovation was carried out by the Friends' Association and many other authorities with the participation of the State Office for Monument Preservation.
