P. Leela

P. Leela ( Porayathu Leela ; Malayalam : പി. ലീല ; born April 25, 1932 or May 19, 1933 or 1934 in Chittur , Kerala ; † October 31, 2005 in Chennai , Tamil Nadu ) was an Indian singer . Together with her contemporary P. Susheela , she was one of the main playback singers in films in the South Indian languages ​​in the 1950s and 1960s.

Life

She made her film debut in a Tamil film in 1947 . Her breakthrough came in 1949 with her songs for the Telugu film Gunsundari Katha by KV Reddy . She often sang in Telugu / Tamil productions by Vijaya Pictures , including KV Reddy's Patala Bhairavi (1951) and Maya Bazaar (1957), as well as LV Prasad's Missamma (1955) and SS Vasan's Vanjikottai Valiban (1958). She recorded songs for more than 400 films.

In addition to her work for the film, Leela was a singer of light South Indian classical music . She had a long-term contract with Columbia Graphophone , during which around 250 records were released. She also appeared frequently on the radio in Madras.

P. Leela died of pneumonia in a hospital in Chennai. She was posthumously honored in 2006 with the Padma Bhushan .
