The PGO 356 Classic is a roadster that was introduced in 1998 after the new owners of PGO Automobiles ( Laurent Skrzypczak and Olivier Baudouin ) stopped production of the Cobra replica called the PGO Speedster .

With the new management, the French manufacturer gained access to rights and patents of the Belgian brand Apal , which at the time also belonged to the businessman Laurent Skrzypczak. This was known for the development of vehicles based on the VW Beetle . The replica Apal Speedster , which has been built since 1981, was based on a chassis of the Beetle that was shortened by 120 mm and was to be built in France under a new name from now on. But since the discontinued Cobra replica had already been marketed in France under the name Speedster, a name was finally chosen that of the Porsche 356A 1600 modelmost closely matched. From now on the former Apal Speedster was called PGO 356 Classic.

In the PGO 356 Classic , the chassis of the Beetle has been shortened by 230 mm. The standard motorization of the Beetle imported from Mexico had an output of 35 kW (47 hp). An output of 66 kW (90 hp) was possible as the top engine. Both engines were 4-cylinder boxer engines . The 356 Classic had a 4-speed manual transmission.
