history
Before the end of construction of the SP45 series (1976), the construction of two prototypes of a successor series with higher power, electric train heating and a redesigned locomotive body began. The two prototypes were completed in 1974 and were given the type designation 303D and the numbers SU46-001 and -002. In 1976, immediately after the construction of the SP45 series was finished, series production of the SU46 series began. The two prototypes were adopted by the PKP in 1977 and 1978 respectively. A total of 52 locomotives of the SU46 series had been built by 1977. In 1985 two locomotives of practically identical construction were delivered.
A prototype of a more powerful variant for up to 140 km / h was built as early as 1975, another followed in 1977. These prototypes were taken over as the SP47 series , and there was no series production.
The two prototypes were taken out of service in 1990, and some series locomotives followed. 2004 were still 38 SU46 in the stock of PKP and the railway depots Czerwieńsk , Gdynia , Olsztyn , Poznań and Wrocław home. SU46-011, -032, -037 and -048 were equipped for use in Germany in 2006 in order to save the locomotive change in Forst and to enable the passage to Cottbus . At the same time, these locomotives were given a new paint job by PKP Cargo .
