In the PO-3700 Series (also referred 231-700) is, in order of André Chapelon converted Pacific locomotives , the first as conversions from older, from 1912 for the Paris-Orleans railway built (PO) machines of series 3500 originated .

France

A first prototype was built from PO 3556 in 1929. By carefully considering the principles of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics , Chapelon succeeded in doubling machine performance and reducing consumption by half. The locomotive had a sheet-metal frame , a boiler with three cylindrical boiler shots and a Belpaire - firebox with a trapezoidal, steeply sloping grate . Furthermore, a four-cylinder compound engine of the "de Glehn" type , a valve control and two AFCI mixing preheaters . Chapelon ensured a generous, flow-oriented design of the steam-carrying cross-sections to reduce pressure losses and equipped the locomotive with a double Kylchap induced draft system .

Since this conversion was satisfactory, the locomotives 3501 to 3520 followed in 1932. Further locomotives were converted from 1934, these could reach a top speed of 120 km / h. The conversions, especially the 3715 locomotive, were so successful that these locomotives are among the best French designs. The French Northern Railway (NORD) therefore had 48 identical machines built in 1936/37, 28 of which were new builds.

The modifications, including those of the locomotives for the NORD, were carried out in the PO main workshop in Tours , the machines were also called "Reines de Tours" (queens of Tours). The new buildings for NORD were built by the Compagnie des forges et aciéries de la marine et d'Homécourt (CAFL; serial numbers 3.1111–3.1120), at Fives-Lille (3.1121–3.1130) and Blanc-Misseron (3.1193–3.1198).

When the SNCF was founded in 1938, the locomotives were assigned to the 231 E series. During the 1950s, two locomotives reached speeds of up to 175 km / h. For pantograph tests, they pushed an electric locomotive in front of them and also pulled two measuring vehicles. The last examples of the 231 E were in service until April 1967 and were among the last steam locomotives in the SNCF's fleet.

Two machines were preserved. The conversion locomotive 231 E 22 is listed as 3.1192 NORD in the Mulhouse Railway Museum . The new locomotive 231 E 41 (ex 3.1123) has been a protected monument in Saint-Pierre-des-Corps since 1974 and is currently being restored.

technology

The steam boiler of the locomotives, which has a diameter of 1.67 m, has a fire box of the type "Belpaire", this has an area of 15.245 m². The superheater consists of 28 tubes, the superheater temperature is 410 ° C. The boiler pressure is 1.6 MPa. The locomotive uses 1.35 kg of coal and 8.5 liters of water per horsepower hour .

GDR

After the Second World War, there was a single 231 E on the territory of the DR in the Soviet zone. It was rebuilt for test purposes in 1952, but retired in 1958.
