The establishment in its current form as a philosophical-theological college took place on September 1, 1971. In addition to basic specialist theological and religious education training, further education courses are offered on topics of marriage and family , catechesis and the culture of Christianity .

After the resignation of Rector Josef Kreiml, accepted by Diocesan Bishop Alois Schwarz at the end of 2019, Josef Spindelböck was entrusted with the management of the university. The university will cease teaching at the end of the 2019/20 academic year.
