The establishment in its current form as a philosophical-theological college took place on September 1, 1971. After the resignation of Rector Josef Kreiml, accepted by Diocesan Bishop Alois Schwarz at the end of 2019, Josef Spindelböck was entrusted with the management of the university. The university will cease teaching at the end of the 2019/20 academic year.
