The PZL I-22 Iryda (Polish for Iridium ) is a Polish jet trainer (training aircraft) that was developed and built by the aircraft manufacturer PZL Mielec in the 1970s .

description

The PZL I-22 Iryda was intended as a successor to the PZL TS-11 Iskra jet trainer and the Lim-6 in the Polish Air Force . The aircraft is a twin-engine high-wing aircraft with two seats arranged one behind the other. Outwardly, the I-22 is very similar to the Franco-German Alpha Jet from the 1970s. Two prototypes were produced, one of which was only used as a break cell for static load tests. The other prototype made its maiden flight on March 5, 1985 and crashed on January 31, 1987 during a test flight. From September 1991 four more test aircraft flew. The Polish Air Force received a total of eight I-22s between 1992 and 1996, although the Polish Armed Forces were considering purchasing more than 30 aircraft. In the mid-1990s, the program was finally discontinued due to financial and technical problems. Only a few copies were used by the Polish Air Force.

Several units were considered as engines, such as B. the Canadian JT15D or Polish engines like the K-15 or D-18A.
