The PZL P.1 was the first fighter aircraft designed and built in Poland from 1929. It served as the basis for the P.7 and P.11 types , which formed the backbone of Polish fighter pilots in the 1930s. The concept finally resulted in the type P.24 , which was exported to numerous Balkan countries. There were two prototypes of the P.1.

development

In the 1920s, the Polish Air Force had a hodgepodge of different types of aircraft, mainly of French origin. That is why the Ministry of Aviation issued a specification for the creation of a standard fighter aircraft. Zygmunt Puławski , designer at PZL , therefore designed the P.1 from 1928 as a parallel design to the PWS10 . This shoulder wing was provided with bent wings , which tapered in profile and in thickness outwards and should allow the pilot a good view. These wings were the main feature of the P-series and became known internationally as the Puławski (or Polish ) wings . The scissor-shaped rigid main landing gear with oil shock absorbers was another characteristic.

The first prototype P.1 / I was powered by a V12 Hispano Suiza 12Lb engine. The first flight took place in September 1929 by Captain Bolesław Orliński. In March 1930 the P.1 / II followed with the same engine, but a modified cooler arrangement and a modified rudder. The further development was canceled because of the Polish Air Force for future fighters of the drive by a radial engine was favored. In the same month the PWS10 completed flight tests and it was decided to produce it in series. Puławski therefore developed the P.1 to the P.6 and P.7 .

The design of the P.1 with its Puławski grand piano caused a sensation at exhibitions of the aviation industry in the early 1930s. Soon after the publication of the P.1, drafts were also made in other countries that took up this design feature.
