The PZL SW-4 Puszczyk ( German  Tawny Owl ) is a light single-engine multi - purpose helicopter from the Polish manufacturer PZL Świdnik with turbine drive .

development

Świdnik started developing a new four to five-seat helicopter in 1981. The concept was the installation of a 300 kW PZL Rzeszow-GTD-350 - gas turbine before; A speed of 240 km / h with a range of 900 kilometers was planned. In 1985 the definition of the SW-4 began. A 1: 1 mock-up was completed in 1987.

After the fall of the Iron Curtain , Świdnik completely revised the model. In addition to the new drive, an Allison 250 turbine, the helicopter received a more streamlined fuselage and a modified tail unit.

The first prototype (serial number 600102) - a still flightless test version - was presented in December 1994 and used for ground tests. Then a cell for breaking tests (SN: 600101) and two airworthy prototypes (SN: 600103 and 600104) were created. The first flight of the 600103, which was painted completely in red, took place on October 26, 1996. This machine received the aircraft registration SP-PSW . The flight tests in 1997 forced changes to the rotor head , the stabilizers and the hydraulic system. The second flyable prototype, painted entirely in yellow, was presented at the 1997 Paris Air Show. In October 1998 it received the registration number SP-PSZ, but did not fly for the first time until 2001. The aviation approval for the type was granted in 1999, at the same time the first five series machines were launched. The aviation approval according to JAR-27 took place on November 14, 2002. In addition to the basic version with the Allison drive, PZL Świdnik is planning a second variant with Pratt & Whitney Canada PW200 drives, which are to be manufactured by PZL. In addition, a twin-engine model is planned as European regulations restrict the use of single-engine helicopters under certain conditions. The SW-4 can be used in a variety of ways, for example for business flights, ambulance transports or police operations. The helicopter should also be used in border protection or in military pilot training.

In 2002 the Polish Air Force ordered 47 machines, which were delivered by 2010. The list price is $ 750,000.

In mid-2012, the manufacturer presented the prototype of an optional unmanned or manned version of the helicopter, which was to fly unmanned for the first time in 2013. The version, known as SW-4 Solo RUAS / OPH and developed in cooperation with Leonardo SpA , did not fly remotely until December 18, 2016 in Italy.
