Juan Pablo García-Berdoy (born March 9, 1961 in Madrid ) is a Spanish diplomat .

Life

He studied law . From May 1987 to July 1988 he worked as an advisor in the cabinet of the Spanish Foreign Minister. This was followed by an assignment as a Spanish consul in Manila in the Philippines until July 1990 . This was followed by a position as a consultant in the office of the Spanish Foreign Minister. From December 1990 he was a consultant in the State Secretariat for the European Communities and there responsible for the Central and Eastern European countries. In December 1991 he went to Bonn as a consultant at the Spanish embassy in Germany , where he worked until January 1996. He was particularly concerned with European affairs. From January to June 1995 he worked as a consultant in the European Department of the Federal Foreign Office and from June to December 1995 he was part of a group dealing with the Maastricht Treaty .

In January 1996 he took on the role of office manager and personal advisor to the Secretary of State for Foreign Policy and European Affairs, until in May 2000 he became office manager and personal advisor to the presidency of the Spanish House of Representatives, Congreso de los Diputados . From December 2002 to May 2004 he was head of the European department of the Spanish Foreign Ministry.

In March 2005 he became the Spanish ambassador to Romania and Moldova . He held the offices until April 2009. He then took leave of absence from the diplomatic service. In October 2009 he founded the Aspen Institute Spain and became its General Secretary in 2010.

In 2012 he went to Berlin as the Spanish ambassador to Germany . December 2016 he became the permanent representative of Spain to the European Union .

Personal

He is married and has three sons. In addition to Spanish , he speaks German , English , French and Romanian .
