The pagoda snails ( Pagodulina ) are a genus of the family of the barrel snails ( Orculidae) from the suborder of the land snails (Stylommatophora).

features

The housings are ovate to ovoid-cylindrical with 7 to 8.5 well-arched turns. The size varies from 2.3 to 4.5 mm in height and 1.2 to 2.4 mm in width. The shell is firm and somewhat translucent, the surface shiny. The color varies from amber to brown. The mouth is egg-shaped and free, or almost free with a folded, thickened mouth edge. The parietal lamella lies deep in the mouth, the front end can just be seen from the outside and from below. The spindle lamella is weak and sits on the back of the spindle. The long palate fold is different in strength.

In the male part of the sexual apparatus, the spermatic duct enters the epiphallus apically or slightly laterally. In the longitudinal section, a rudimentary flagellum is still formed internally at the proximal end of the epiphallus . A blind sack ( caecum ) on the penis may or may not be present. Internally, the penis shows fold structures that are elongated or transverse to the longitudinal axis. Very small, tetragonal crystals are embedded in the lumen of the penis. In the female part, the vagina and free fallopian tube are about the same length, or the vagina is slightly shorter. Shortly after the branching off from the fallopian tube, the stalk of the spermathec is thickened into a bean-shaped gland attached to the side. The bladder is oblong-ovoid. A long, thin diverticulum branches off between the gland on the stalk of the spermathec and the bladder .

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species of the genus occur in Central and Southern Europe, Eastern Europe (Ukraine) and Asia Minor to the Caucasus . Recently the type species of the genus was found again in the Auvergne ; the last evidence from there was from 1851.

Taxonomy and systematics

The naming of this taxon is a story of trials and tribulations. In 1864 Giuseppe Stabile (also Joseph Stabile) established the genus Pagodina , with the only species Pupa pagodula Des Moulins, 1830. Pagodina is preoccupied by Pagodina Van Beneden, 1853 (Crustacea). Paul Hesse therefore proposed Pagodula as a replacement name in 1916 . This name is again preoccupied by Pagodula Monterosato, 1884. Johannes Thiele now proposed another replacement name with Pagodinella . It was not taken into account that Stephan Clessin had established the generic name Pagodulina for Pupa pagodula Des Moulins in 1876 ​​independently of Stabile , in 1830 the renaming of Pagodina and Pagodula was completely unnecessary.

Schileyko (1998) succeeded Henry Augustus Pilsbry (1922–1926) and left another subfamily Pagodulinae, which, however, is not recognized by Philippe Bouchet and Jean-Pierre Rocroi or the Fauna Europaea. The genus Pagodulina is therefore placed in the subfamily Orculinae. Schileyko (1998) also ruled out two sub-genera, Pagodulina (Pagodulina) and Pagodulina (Crystallifera) Schileyko, 1976. As early as 1978, Edwin Gittenberger was very cautious about the value of the differences between the two sub-genera put forward by Schileyko. Welter-Schultes (2012) only lists the species under the genus Pagodulina . The Fauna Europaea also does not use any sub-genus classification. Schileyko (2012), however, continues to adhere to the sub-genre and thus to Pagodulina (Crystallifera) .
