Pagothenia borchgrevinki is a species of fish from the genus of the Antarctic cod , which, as the genus name suggests, occurs in the southern ocean or Antarctic waters. The species occurs in the Weddell Sea , the Ross Sea , the Davissee , the Vincennes Bay , as well as around the Budd Coast , the Antarctic Peninsula , the South Orkney Islands and the South Shetland Islands in water depths from the surface down to about 550 Meters, although it rarely stays below 30 meters.

Way of life and characteristics

The animals of this species are often found on the underside of floating ice surfaces, where they hunt down copepods and krill crabs living there , and in turn represent important prey for the predatory fish Gymnodraco acuticeps and Dissostichus mawsoni as well as penguins, seals and smaller whales. Due to the environment, Pagothenia borchgrevinki has anti-frost proteins in the body and is therefore well adapted to water temperatures below the freezing point of the water.

Sexually mature animals spawn once a year, the species has a long pelagic larval phase.

The total length is up to 28 centimeters, the animals have a yellow base color with dark spots and cross stripes on the body, the spots are occasionally also pronounced on the dorsal and caudal fin.

  • Fin formula : dorsal IV – VII, 34–38, anal 30–35.

The species is not fished commercially.
