Paisley High Church

The Paisley High Church , today Oakshaw Trinity Church is a church building in the Scottish town of Paisley in the Council Area Renfrewshire . It belongs to a congregation that has been formed from congregations of the Church of Scotland and the United Reformed Church in Scotland and sees itself as ecumenical . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It also forms together with the Christian Social Action Center and other buildings a category A monument ensemble. The church is still in use as such today.

history

Paisley High Church dates back to 1754 when construction began based on a design by architect John White. It was finally completed in 1756, with the bell tower not being built until 1770. The cost of construction was around £ 1560. In 1876 the building was renovated for around £ 6,000. After close collaboration between the Paisley High parish and surrounding parishes since the 1980s , it merged with the St John's parishes and the Paisley Congregational Church to form an ecumenical parish in 1991 . Paisley High Church was named Oakshaw Trinity Church , but is known by the original name in everyday life.

The rectangular building is at the head of Church Hill cul-de-sac in the city center. The masonry consists of ashlar stones that are embossed on the building edges . The five-story bell tower rises up on the south side. In the middle there is the entrance portal, which closes in an embossed segment arch. On the third floor there are tower clocks on all sides with surrounding pillars . A balustrade cantilevered over it . The tower closes with a hexagonal helmet. There are arched windows on both sides of the tower.

On the opposite side of the building, six windows are arranged symmetrically below the roof. In the center is a crowned door framed by pillars. Two more doors are on the outer building axes; in between there are smaller lattice windows . Windows are arranged on five vertical axes along the two side facades. The building closes with a slate-covered platform roof .
