The Pajares tunnel ( Spanish Túneles de Pajares ) is under construction befindlicher railway tunnel of future high-speed line LAV León-Asturias between the Spanish cities of Leon and Oviedo . The opening was originally planned for 2009, but had to be postponed to 2014 first due to water ingress into the tunnel tubes, later to 2021 at the earliest due to the euro crisis and for various other reasons, although no official date is given.

location

The Cantabrian Mountains are very difficult to climb due to their complex geographical conditions. The existing railway connection between Castile-León and Asturias over the Pajares Pass is very winding and only one-lane. With a nearly 25 km long, two-tube base tunnel , the 83 km long mountain route is to be relieved and Asturias is to be opened up with a high-speed route. With the completion of the Pajares tunnel, it will be possible to reduce the travel time between Oviedo and León to a fraction of the previous one.

history

On March 4, 1994, the Pajares tunnel was included in the 1993–2007 infrastructure structure plan. The preliminary project was drawn up by the Ineco-Geoconsult consortium and approved by the government on January 29, 2003.

The tunnel was excavated with five tunnel boring machines , two worked from the south (lot 1), two from the north (lot 3 and 4), the fifth started from an intermediate attack from Buiza and excavated the escape tunnel before each 4.2 km each Tube erupted in a geologically difficult area to the north (Lot 2).

Building

With a total length of 24.6 kilometers, it is the second longest Spanish railway tunnel after the Guadarrama tunnel . The tunnel begins in the Spanish region of Castile and León at La Pola de Gordón , crosses the Cantabrian Mountains and ends at Telledo in the neighboring region of Asturias .

The tunnel consists of two individual tubes at a distance of 50 m. There are connection points every 400 m which can also be used as shelters. The tunnel also has a 400 m long emergency stop 11 km behind the south portal (box: Punto de Parada Preferente ), which can be reached from Buiza via a 5.5 km long access tunnel . Another 2 km long access tunnel leads from Folledo to a point 7.7 km behind the south portal. This tunnel was mainly used to build the tunnel, but it will be kept as an emergency access.

Future of the existing mountain route

The original plan was to equip the Pajares tunnel with a three- rail track and to cease operations on the mountain route completely. The three - rail track could have been used by both the standard-gauge high - speed trains and the freight trains with Iberian broad gauge . Lack of money first led to the decision to only lay the sleepers for a future three-rail track, but only to mount the rails of the standard gauge, and then to the decision to also lay the sleepers only for the standard gauge track.

The tunnel is therefore only used by standard gauge trains. The existing line is to remain for the time being for the purpose of freight traffic in order to prevent slow freight trains from obstructing high-speed traffic on the new line.

The narrow-gauge operator FEVE is demanding the installation of a third rail on the existing line in order to close the gap between the Ferrocarril de La Robla railway line and the various narrow-gauge lines in Asturias. It turned out, however, that the project would only be feasible with a four-rail track and that FEVE does not have any suitable locomotives for covering the planned coal trains on the mountain line.
