The Palais Fürstenberg is a palace in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City , at the corner of Domgasse and Grünangergasse. Despite several renovations, it still largely retains its original appearance.

history

From the middle of the 16th century to the beginning of the 18th century, the Otto Weissische Stiftungshaus for ecclesiastical beneficiaries stood at the original location of today's palace . In 1702 this was bought by the imperial councilor Ernst Freiherr von Hatzenberg and the construction of a palace started in its place (completion around 1720). The executing architect was probably Antonio Beduzzi from Bologna , the influence of Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt is mentioned on the information board of the municipality of Vienna attached to the house. In the course of the 18th century, several noble families such as the Counts Seilern from 1707, the Counts of Kuefstein from 1723 and the Barons von Störck from 1792 owned the property. Under their leadership, major renovations were carried out on the property between 1851 and 1869.

When Karl Freiherr von Störck sold the palace in 1873, the princesses Elisabeth and Amalia von Croÿ and, from 1882, Friedrich Landgrave von Fürstenberg came into possession of the palace. The landgrave had his new property renovated by the builder Ernst Krombholz shortly after the purchase. From 1901, the Fürstenberg Palace fell into private hands. In 1920 the joint stock company for international trade in goods became new owner. The Palais Fürstenberg has been in the hands of the Main Association of the Austrian Book Trade since 1927 . From 1929 to 1931, the later Austrian Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuß worked here as President of the Agricultural Workers Insurance Company for Vienna , Lower Austria and Burgenland .

The last major renovation took place in 1980 and 1981.
