House Solms

The house Solms , even Palais Solms called, is a historistisches house in Karlsruhe . After several changes of ownership, the building in Bismarckstrasse has served as the guest house of the city of Karlsruhe since 1946.

The house was built in 1881/1882 as the retirement home of the industrialist Georg Heimburger. The Karlsruhe architect Gustav Ziegler combined elements of the Romanesque in the architectural design , such as large arched windows, with Baroque and Renaissance reminiscences. Allegorizing reliefs can be seen under the gables of the porches . Hermes , the Greek god of merchants and thieves, who can be seen on the facade facing Reinhold-Frank-Straße, probably refers to the biography of the first house owner Heimburger as well as the symbols for trade and industry - a ship's bow, a globe and similar items. On the facade facing Bismarckstrasse there is relief decoration that is more reminiscent of the military activities in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871.

The interior design of the palace can largely be traced back to the second owner, the artist and craftsman Hermann Götz , who took over the building as Heimburger's son-in-law in 1895. The stucco and wooden ceilings as well as various valuable furniture are remarkable.

In 1902, Count Max Otto Gustav zu Solms -Sonnenwalde-Raesa acquired the palace that is now named after him. The childless couple wanted to bequeath it to the city of Karlsruhe, but the widow was forced to sell it during the inflationary period . Since 1931 the Solms Museum has been located there, at times also a Scheffel Museum, today's Museum of Literature on the Upper Rhine , and the Karlsruhe City Archives before it was only used for representative purposes. Over 1000 civil marriages take place every year in the various halls and rooms of the building.

The valuable artistic and handicraft equipment of the house includes portraits of the parents of Countess von Solms-Sonnenwalde-Raesa von Lenbach as well as porcelain, glass, silver and enamel vessels from the 17th century.
