Palazzo Barbaro Wolkoff: main facade

Palazzo Barbaro Wolkoff is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Dorsoduro sestiere overlooking the Grand Canal between Palazzo Dario and Palazzo Salviati .

history

The building, which was originally built in the Venetian- Byzantine style, was rebuilt in the 15th century with the addition of Gothic elements. In 1894 Eleonora Duse lived on the top floor of the palace as a guest of Alexander Wolkoff Mouronzov , who had recently bought the building.

The inhomogeneous facade is made almost entirely of red brick and is characterized by its narrow, tall shape. There is a ground floor, a mezzanine , a main floor and two upper floors. The distribution of the decorative elements, seemingly without any order, makes the analysis of the main facade difficult, which is made possible by the lightness of the six-fold window on the main floor, which is surrounded by a rectangular, serrated frame. Only the gothic style keel arched portal to the water, the numerous individual windows and the multiple windows on the upper storey give it a contour . When analyzing the upper floors, it is noticeable that, in contrast to the triple window and the Gothic single window on the top floor, which resume the general style of the building, the quadruple window and the double window on the second floor are characterized by a decided anachronism due to their arching. Pateras and coats of arms are more recent.
