Palazzo Gritti a San Francesco della Vigna , also Palazzo della Nunziatura , is a palace in Venice in the Italian region of Veneto . It is located in the Sestiere Castello overlooking the Rio di San Francesco della Vigna , very close to the Church of San Francesco della Vigna .
history
The palace was built in 1525 by order of Doge Andrea Gritti as a residence for moving in after his retirement from office. The year of construction can be seen on a sign on the facade. After the premature death of the owner, the house fell to the Contarini and Morosini families . The palace was later sold to the Republic of Venice for 25,000 ducats . In 1564 it was presented to Pope Pius IV , who made it the seat of his own apostolic nuncio, who previously had no permanent seat.
In the 19th century, the palace fell to the Franciscans , who connected it to their own monastery with a colonnade overpass planned by the architect GA Pagazzi . During the First World War the palace was used as a military prison. Today it is a private residence.

The palace, without much architectural interest, has three facades and an inner courtyard in the middle. It is known only for its quadruple window in the center of the main facade, which has been partially bricked up, and for its three portals, one in each facade. The one in the side facade, by far the most impressive, has an architrave . It shows a triangular tympanum and three coats of arms. The portal on the main facade below the quadruple window looks simple and imitates the former. The portal to the water has a round arch and a coat of arms.
