The Palazzo dei Camerlenghi is a palace in the style of the Renaissance in Venice in the Italian region of Veneto . It is located in the San Polo sestiere , overlooking the Grand Canal next to the Rialto Bridge .

history

The palace was built between 1525 and 1528 according to plans by Guglielmo the Grigi , who was designed by Mauro Codussi and Pietro Lombardo . It was the seat of the financial magistrate, z. B. the Camerlenghi , the Consoli dei Mercanti and the Sopraconsoli dei Mercanti . In view of this important economic function, the ground floor of the palace was intended as a prison for insolvent debtors, as evidenced by the toponym Fondamenta de la preson (English: prison bank ). This display of prisoners in the Rialto district served as a stern warning to passers-by.

After the fall of the Republic of Venice , the building housed the Corte d'Appello (German: regional court), as well as offices for property management and the registry. Today the converted building serves as the seat of the financial magistrate, including the regional seat of the audit office .

description

The palace is pentagonal in plan to follow the curve of the Grand Canal at this point and is three stories high. It shows high arched windows that are separated by pilaster strips and crowned by interesting friezes . This “state box” was decorated on the outside with multi-colored marble and porphyry , which was lost over time.

It was a Serenissima tradition for a justice of the peace to leave a painting or religious object with his portrait or coat of arms as a gift when he finished his service. The Palazzo dei Camerlenghi was thus filled with many works of art before they were scattered across Europe under the Kingdom of Italy . Fortunately, many of them returned to Venice, if not to this palace.
