history

According to Nahil Mabrouks, president of the Palestinian Track and Field Federation , the Palestinian Olympic Committee was founded in 1931 and remained a member of the NOC until Israel conquered and occupied East Jerusalem , the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 Six Day War .

The Palestinian Olympic Committee was admitted as a provisional member of the Asian Association in 1986. Israel, which was stripped of membership in the same association in 1982, protested against this decision. This decision allowed the Palestinians to take part in the Asian Games . Yasser Arafat , chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), was also chairman of the committee at the time.

The first Olympic Games Palestine was allowed to participate in were the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. The Israeli government under Benjamin Netanyahu had protested against the use of the name Palestine , but had failed to protest. The long-distance runner Majid abu Maraheel was designated as the flag bearer.

Akram Zaher, manager for international relations at the POK, was also a member of the Federation of West Asian Games . He was killed in an explosion in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon in 2009.

Jibril ar-Radschub , chairman of the POK, also holds the office of chairman of the Palestine Football Association and was elected to the Fatah Central Committee in August 2009 .

Samar Araj Mousa is a member of the POK and also works as the sports director of the University of Bethlehem , coach of the Palestine women's national football team and general secretary of the Palestinian Tennis Association.

In July 2012, the chairman of the Palestinian Olympic Committee, Jibril ar-Radschub , called the petition to observe a minute's silence for the eleven Israeli athletes who were murdered by Arab-Palestinian terrorists of the PFLP at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , "racist" . In an interview with Lebanese TV broadcaster Al-Mayadeen on April 30, 2013, Rajoub said, "We don't have an atomic bomb, but I swear if we had an atomic bomb we would have used it this morning."

Palestine has been taking part in the Summer Olympics since 1996 .
