Paltothemis is a genus of dragonflies consisting of four species. The genus belongs to the subfamily Trithemistinae and wasdescribedby Ferdinand Karsch in 1890 . Ananimal of the previously undescribed species Paltothemis lineatipes servedas the generotype . The range extends from the southwest of the United States to Panama .

features

Paltothemis species are comparatively large dragonflies and reach lengths between 47 and 54 millimeters. The abdomen ( abdomen ) and the chest ( thorax ) are blue or red. The initially light face also turns red with age. The spines appearing in two forms on the femora of the rear pair of legs of the males can be used to easily differentiate the genus . In Paltothemis two or three are long, the rest is stocky and short. The wings are transparent or, as in the males of Paltothemis lineatipes , orange at the base. The last Antenodalader in the front wing is incomplete, so it does not extend from the Costalader to the Radiusader .

Habitat

Paltothemis - adults live in forests. Sitting on leaves, they wait for prey.
